Vegan Chocolate Brownies Honey!

Image
Vegan Chocolate Brownies Honey! (Minus the honey, because we don’t consume honey. FREE THE BEES!!!) Ingredients for brownie: 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips (make sure there’s no milk or traces)  1/2 cup oat flour  1 cup unsweetened applesauce 1/4 cup cacao powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 1/3 tsp vanilla extract  a little salt  and 2 tbsps crushed almond for crunch Ingredients for topping:  1/4 cup of coconut flakes for topping 1 tbsps shredded almond or almond slices 1 cup melted semi sweet chocolate chips Line your container with a vegan butter ( I use Earth Balance). Bake it in the oven for 30 mins on 350 and voila! You got your sweet tooth fix! Leave it to cool for about another 40 mins until the brownie is ready to slice.  Pour the melted cup of chocolate over fudge brownie and glide spoon over for equal distribution. Toss coconut on top and add almonds on top of the coconut. Allow to rest for a few minutes, then cut up and enjoy alo

Dating While Vegan

Image
Dating is difficult in 2017. I remember the time when someone would muster the courage to tell another person how much they loved them and couldn’t live without them. Wait, actually, I think that was in a movie... and most Jamaicans aren’t too lovey dovey. Lucky if you get a hug. I’m a hugger though. As long as you like sideways hugs until I can trust you. Those full hugs are at my discretion, honey. Nevertheless, those movies are old, from like the 1990’s and those days are gone in the last century. They’re almost non-existent. Dating now, has primarily began over the computer scene. In fact, I think a lot of women, especially educated Black women, have set their eyes on traveling and starting businesses or owning a home with a miniature poodle inside, instead of finding the one . Men seem to be hoping for that one too, yet many have an unrealistic perception of women and what they should be. I think this actually works vice versa and up/down, horizontal/vertical... any which way

I love brushing my teeth. After every meal is about accurate for me. I keep a toothbrush in my purse. Never know when your breath may start to smell a little funky after eating garlic hummus and pita chips. May need to scrub that tongue before you start talking to people in their face. You probably should excuse yourself before meet and greet in a church service if you’ve had your mouth closed for too long. Church has some of the worst breaths (I love y’all, don’t be mad) after the service and everyone knows what I’m talking about because you’re usually very hungry after they say the final “amen.” Hello somebody (as my favorite childhood Pastor would say). Hello somebody. Hello, anybody out there? Anybody ever read the list of ingredients in their toothpaste? One vegan day, not too long ago, I thought:  Conscious Self (CS): Girrrrrrrl Self Formed By Society And Experiences (SFBSAE): What you need girl? CS: Gurl! I need you too check those ingredients. ”Oh Baby I Like It Raw!”

Image
ODB isn’t the only person who likes it raw. Many Raw Vegans talk about the benefits of going into a raw food diet, and coming this January, I am also going to take the plunge. I’m not nervous. I welcome this challenge for myself. I’m already making a list of fruits and veggies in season that I love, and all the smoothies and bowls I plan to make from them. I think I’ll be in chia seed heaven. I’m ready. Why raw vegan? I have a friend beginning her detox specialist degree, who has studied and proven these things on herself and others. She’s witnessed whole diseases disappear, placing someone on a holistic journey. I am very pleased to see that after gaining a great deal of weight, she was able to lose almost 100 pounds (a little over 7 stones). I’ve been astonished to see how great she looks and how healthy she feels, but she’s not done until she sees a total change. As a Fruitarian now, she discloses that she can feel everything in her body that is not normal. The more she juices,

Weight loss At 15 Pounds

Image
This photo highlights my weight loss at only 15 pounds in. I had begun strength training and focused on walking for one hour everyday. Then I began changing up the routine to get a different result, and the weight began to melt off without exercise.Yes Isaid without exercise. I changed my diet further to lose 14 additional pounds. Check out my entry on 29 pounds down to see the difference without exercise. This is proof of the 80/20 rule. It’s less about how much you work out and more of what you eat. Find your balance and let me know how your journey is going in the comment section.

What’s a JAMERICAN?

Image
Back in the day, way back in time, it was actually pretty offensive to call someone a JAMERICAN. Now, they’ve got a flag for this. Before I get carried away, let me say this. I was born in Jamaica... by the river! In a little tenttttt... and ohhhh just like the river! I’ve been running ever since! It’s been a loooong time coming, but I knowwwwwwwwww that you’ll share this link! Oh yes you will! (Sam Cooke voice). Actually I was born in a hospital. I was living the good life! Then my parents decided to move to America a few years later. I am a citizen of Jamaica, yet I have been living in America for many years. Being neither here nor there has been an identity crisis all of my life, yet with food, it all seems to disappear. Food is the one thing that joins us all together. We eat Asian food, Indian food, American food, West Indian food, and other countries serve food based on cultures too. A perfect example of this was when I went to a restaurant in London and one of the me

Fresh Herbs

Image
Fresh herbs make a difference in cooking. They can take a simple meal to an entirely different level, exciting the taste buds and guaranteeing success in the kitchen. I base my level of success in the kitchen by how many times a person says “daaaaayyyyyyyuuuuummmm”, which is “damn” in basic Black girl language. Thyme... drumroll please... is on your side! Cymbals clash! I’m corny. I know. Speaking of corn, I should grab some today for a Jamaican Pumpkin soup I want to make. I NEEDS THE CORN! Ok, I’m done. So fresh thyme is important because it can really enhance your meat substitute dishes. Seitan and tofu, if you’re transitioning, isn’t the most wonderful thing in the world. It needs work. It needs to be marinated in spices and herbs and sauces, just like ummm... raw meat! You’re probably getting the hang of my dry humor if you’re still reading, and trust me, I appreciate you for it. If you’re not used to dry humor, I’m going to get you open, like legs on a Saturday night

Whole Foods Review

Image
I went to Whole Foods with my friend Fizza a few days ago, and our experience was interesting, surprising and wonderful. I did not intentionally mean to stare at the associate stacking water, nor did I intentionally mean to see him again in the aisle that carried the Nutritional Yeast and Gluten I needed to get, but was too nervous to stay in his aisle. I also didn’t mean to tell him that he was beautiful, and then correct myself to tell him he was actually very handsome. I didn’t mean it, yet all of what happened that evening was intentional. I also have no behavior in public. Moment of silence for my friends. As Fizz (as I affectionately call her) looked for pasta sauce with basil and garlic, a woman, also looking for sauce overheard me saying “Oh hell no! Nine dollars for a sauce!? Uh uh!” She giggled and then randomly asked if either one of us were vegan? Vegans seem to always find each other, and it’s such a great feeling when we do. We talked about pasta, then water, and th

Dead Beat For Eating Dead Meat

Image
Now you’re probably thinking that this post is about to bash all meat eaters, and trust me, I’ve got a lot to say about all the reasons a person should go vegan, yet I’m not here to talk about how “‘those’ meat eaters are so cruel”, and “why can’t ‘they realize what they’re doing to the animals.” I can’t do that, because I was once there myself, and when I was there, I didn’t care, nor, could I make the connections to why anyone would stop eating chicken. To all my meat eaters, I come in peace. This isn’t a blog entry on my website to reinforce why you should become vegan by shoving it down your throat. On the contrary! I’m writing to open perspectives on food and lifestyle choices. How does this photo make you feel? I ask this question because I want you to open your approach to animals, and what we think food is supposed to be. Food can be another creature, if seeing the image of the hanging carcass does not disturb you. Let me tell you what helped to change me

No More Oxtails

One of the parts of being Jamaican that I can greatly appreciate is the food. Our cuisine is unlike any other, infused with African, Irish, English, Asian, Indian and Indigenous Tribes cultural foods, our flavors create a unique blend that make us, as a nation of people, very very appreciative of the meals we’ve created. Here’s a list of things that might catch your eyes. Some of you may have even tried these meals before: Curried Chicken Curried Goat Oxtails and Butter Beans Jerk Chicken Jerk Pork Curried Shrimp Stewed Chicken Stewed Beef Chinese Chicken (Stir Fry) Pot Roast Mannish Wata Soup (Goathead Soup) Rasta Pasta with Shrimp Stewed Cow Foot Cooked Liver Ackee and Salfish (Codfish) Escoveitch Fish (Red Snapper Fish in Peppers) Beef Patty Tripe and Beans Run Down Solomon Gundy Peppered Shrimp So the reason  I bring  up these delicious sounding meals in the list is because these are all highlight dishes, but the primary ingredients

Curing Yourself With Food

Image
This morning I woke up, not feeling like too much of myself. For one, when you’re a vegan, it’s easy to know what has come into your system that your body can no longer tolerate. For instance, I cannot longer tolerate alcohol. Actually, I could never tolerate alcohol, but when you’re vegan, anything that passes through your body also speaks to you, with a thumbs up (energy boost, pain reduction, feeling revitalized), or a thumbs down (diarrhea, stomach cramps, bad bathroom episodes, very smelly gas, lethargy, the “itis”, and IBS) to name a few stomach issues. The reality of it is that food is meant to heal and treat any issues or concerns we have in our bodies... ALL THE TIME. Food never stops treating and giving our bodies what we need, but when we feed ourselves with junk, we’ll have a lot of toxins to remove later. Acne, headaches, depression, the flu virus  and colds, eye problems, excess mucus, pains and aches in joints and heart, exhaustion and irritability is all caused by the

In this transparency,   I hope to bring awareness to others about the vegan lifestyle. Not all vegans are the same, but I will say that our common denominator is that we all care about what goes in and on our bodies, and most vegans share a common empathy for animals. They carry a calmer spirit and willingness to draw closer to their spiritual side. If the spirit calls, drop a dollar in a sistah’s Patreon account haha! HOLLA FOR A DOLLA!! Y’all like how I plugged that? Alright y’all, go be great, and remember, what you do

Vegans Love The Animals

Image
It’s more than just channeling your inner kitty so much that you go out and get a cat ear headband. Or using Snapchat filters because they’re down with the kitty life. ...Everyday... because one kitty filter pic is not enough when you have on different outfits. And the doggy filter is how you wish everyone would see you... because it’s a doggy doggy (dogs don’t eat dogs- neither do vegans lol) world.  And everyday, a new video is important, as a dog... or a flower child. BUT... You always come back to the cat, because cats are where it’s at! Especially when you’re feeling like a royal golden kitty. Yet no matter what, the love you feel for these animals transfers over to the chicken, the cow, the chick, the fish, the calf and all of God’s beautifully made creatures that we are meant to protect and cherish. LOVE ANIMALS, DON’T EAT THEM. Peace and blessings, love and light. Love always, Sher

29 POUNDS DOWN! BEFORE AND AFTER PICS

Image
BEFORE These photos were taken in the U.K. this summer, where I gained a considerable amount of weight in almost 1 month of stay. I went to conduct my research on digital archiving and Black Diasporic history, with a concentration on Caribbean history in Europe. These photos show my body at the weight of 233 pounds, which is the most I have ever weighed to date. With WW2 Veteran David Teacher at the Imperial War Museum, U.K. June 2017. Manchester Station in the U.K. with Steve Preston, owner of Pudding and Pie Being me, outside of the British Library in the United Kingdom, June 2017. At Tea, beside the London Eye July 2017   AFTER  These are current photos of me, taken over the last few days and weeks. Most of the changes are in my face,  arms and abdomen. Being VEGAN has allowed me to drop 29 pounds and counting, to date. I am currently still transitioning to a healthy weight, yet my focus is on feeling better and eating clean.

Anticipation of Vegansgiving

Image
Ahhhh Thanksgiving. The time of year when you’re surrounded by friends, family, and FOOD! Turkey, for one. Turkey is the highlight of the day. Let’s get down to business and be real. I’ve judged someone based off their dry turkey. Yes. Don’t even roll your eyes, because you know you side eye the cook when their turkey is dry. But this year, your girl’s got bigger fish to NOT fry... I’m a vegan approaching the holidays! Now it’s been cute, posting pictures of meals that I’ve made, and all the texts I’ve received for the recipes (wait for the cookbook baby)- but now, with the holidays on the way, what in the world is a vegan girl supposed to do? My husband is not that hott vegan guy circulating the interwebs, rapping over the Shirley Caesar remix to “beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes”... Lordt, he is fine... moment of silencio, por favor...  So I’ve got to thinking, which is usually good, unless it leads to overthinking, which is like the worst for a Virgo, but that’s for an
